On Saturday, the Douglas High girls' basketball team came from behind to slip past the Greenwave, 35-32 at Elmo Derrico Gym. Senior NaJae Jackson led Douglas with 16 points as the Tigers sit one game out of the fourth and final playoff spot in the league.
"We had a real emotional week," Douglas head coach Werner Christen said. "We didn't even practice two days this week. We're not looking at the big picture ... we're taking it one game at a time."
Fallon head coach Chelle Dalager said her team lost control of its emotions down the stretch. Douglas held the Lady Wave to one field goal and five points in the final frame.
However, Dalager added there were a couple of quaestionable calls that frustrated her players. Senior Sara Parson fouled out with 1 minute, 27 seconds left in the game and Dalager did not think Parsons was the culprit.
Seconds before Parsons fouled out, Jackson cut the lead to 31-30 with a layup and then hit 3 of 4 free throws to give the Tigers a 33-31 lead.
"Their press was very, very good," Christen said. "I thought we played pretty well in the fourth quarter."
Fallon sophomore Dijah Nash hit 1 of 2 free throws to cut the lead, but Douglas sophomore Kaitlyn Dry buried a pair of free throws and extend the lead.
"We let our emotions dictate the outcome of the game," Fallon head coach Chelle Dalager said.
The Tigers jumped out to a 9-6 first quarter lead, but the Lady Wave would respond. Fallon's full-court defense forced numerous turnovers and held Douglas to two field goals in the second quarter.
The Lady Wave went on an 11-0 run to take a 17-11 lead before junior Brianne Burnside cut the lead to four.
