The Coleville girls' basketball team split over the weekend to drop into second place in the Western A League.
Friday night Coleville overcame a sloppy performance to squeak out a 33-29 home victory over the Mineral County Serpents.
Despite a season high 37 turnovers and a season low 18 percent from the field, the Lady Wolves put together a 11-7 point fourth quarter to secure the victory. Sophomore Elizabeth Pierce scored eight of the game-high 16 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Lady Wolves to victory.
Linzy Garcia led Coleville with nine rebounds. Also key to the victory were Lela Gnuse-Stokes with seven points and seven rebounds and Martha Robles with three points, seven rebounds and nine steals.
"Although it was an ugly win, the girls showed great resiliency and mental toughness and found a way to win in the end," commented coach Will Sandy.
The top-ranked Virginia City Muckers dominated the Lady Wolves on Saturday, winning the game 57-30.
Gnuse-Stokes scored 11 points to lead Coleville. Molly Garcia also played very well in the loss scoring 10 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
"Despite the final outcome, I thought we played much better on Saturday," Sandy said. "Virginia City is an incredibly talented team that capitalizes on every mistake. They are very athletic, shoot extremely well, and execute nearly flawlessly on both offense and defense."
The Wolves fell to Virginia City 56-53 last week.
Cody Clark had 16 points and Jay Clark added 12 in the loss.
The Falcons defeated Gerlach 59-57 over the weekend.
The Lady Falcons lost to rival Smith Valley 44-28 and beat Gerlach 33-17.
