Wrestling: Tiger grapplers take 5th at Fernley Tourney

The Douglas High wrestling team posted a solid fifth-place finish out of 17 teams at the Fernley Vaquero Classic over the weekend, marking their final tournament before the Northern 4A Regional Championships in February.


The Tigers hauled in a pair of individual championships at the tournament.

Senior Michael Sepulveda took first in the 130-pound class and junior Dillon Spates won the 125-pound class.


Wes Peterson was second in the 119-pound class, Zach Falanga was third in the 189-pound class, Kyle Mathews (160) and Patrick Miller (275) each took fourth-place finishes in their respective classes and Austin Martin was fifth in the 135-pound class.


Senior Cody Spates pinned his first opponent of the tournament but later withdrew due to illness.


Lowry won the team championship with 297 points, Spanish Springs was second at 220.5, Fernley was third and Yerington was fourth.


Douglas travels to Carson tonight for a dual match at 6 p.m. and wraps up the regular season next Wednesday at home against Fallon.
