July has become our family reunion time each year. Butch's family has a reunion on the farm in Mt. Olive, N.C., each year around July 4th, and my family has theirs on Kingsley Lake at Camp Blanding in Starke, Fla., mid-July. It provides us with the opportunity to catch up with all the family and many friends in one trip, especially with the price of airfare. We would like to thank the Settelmeyer family for their contribution of water and electrical pump power to water the 300 trees along Highway 395 in Carson Valley. Without their generosity the tree project would not be sustainable.
I recently read in The Los Angles Times, that the L.A. City Council passed an ordinance that would require the banks that foreclosed on homes, keep them maintained until they are sold. If a bank failed to keep property well maintained a $1,000 per day fine could be levied on the bank. The brokers Friedhoff and Hofell broke ground this week for the new $25,000 court house to be erected at Minden and within a short time will have a big crew of mechanics at work on the structure. The new building will not be in the largest court house in Nevada because Douglas county does not require a $100,000 building but from point of design will be one of the most beautiful county buildings in the state and will reflect great credit to the people of this community.

There will be 11,000 other Catholic Heart Work Camp participants from around the country saying the same thing this summer.
Kids & Horses holds volunteer training to teach interested community members to become side-walkers. Volunteer training was held July 10 at the Kids & Horses ranch at 2869 Esaw Street, off of Stephanie Way in Minden. Kids & Horses is the only premier NARHA (North American Riding for the Handicapped Association) riding center in northern Nevada and volunteers must go through a special training and watch two lessons at the ranch before they can volunteer.
The "Always Lost" art exhibit debuted at the Western Nevada College Carson City campus gallery in 2009, offering an account of the effects of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The little undersea vessels arrived at the Exposition harbor and members of the Dangberg party were invited to the supply ship that accompanies the submarines, where they had tea with the officers.
The annual How Big Is Big fishing derby started July 1 and will run until July 30 on the West Walker River. There will be fish plants during the derby, including one this week, so there should be plenty of fish out there to catch. Just take the ones you catch over to the Walker General Store to be weighed and entered in the contest. This year, there is also be a division for junior anglers 12 years old and younger. All junior contestants will receive a certificate for a free ice cream at Walker Burger, so let them have at it. This is always a fun event and should be the same this year.
A roomful of my treasures netted about $433, but just like those folks on TV's "Antiques Roadshow" I can say, "Grandma's heirlooms weren't worth very much, but I had a great time."
With this tribute I don't mean to dredge up the past or re-open old wounds. I'm merely presenting a different viewpoint of an individual who has made such an impact on his community and his times, a fuller picture of a man who was more than a successful businessman and civic leader. In the nearly three years since his death, I have buried nine family and friends, so I apologize for the timing of this reminiscence.

The 90th annual Genoa Candy Dance Arts & Crafts Faire is 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 25 and 26. The fair features more than 350 art and craft exhibitors and food vendors, and 4,000 pounds of Genoa's famous homemade candy. Admission is free. Parking in designated lots is $5.

As a small business owner for almost 30 years (16 of those in Minden), I was stunned at the naivete displayed in the July 27 Reno Gazette-Journal fact checker article. The author believes Harry Reid has nothing to do with Nevada's unemployment situation.

Summer has truly arrived. So, what do you do with the visiting relatives? We can think of any number of things. First, the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily except Sunday. Bring everyone out to see the exhibits and check out the animal room, which is always the kids' favorite. There is a new exhibit showing pork slaughtering and sausage making in the changing room. This county was famous for its excellent sausage.
I don't often agree with Stuart Posselt, but in his letter ("Heads Should Roll" June 25) about holding people accountable for past bad decisions made regarding the failing water systems, he makes a good point. He writes that most of those responsible have left by now, but at least one is seeking higher office. The person he refers to is former county commissioner Kelly Kite who is running against JoEtta Brown for state Assembly.

The annual Ruhenstroth Volunteer Fire Department Bar-B-Q is July 10 at the station on Pinto Lane. It's always a fun evening to visit with neighbors that we may be too busy to see during the year and a chance to meet new friends - a giant block party is the department's goal. There will be games for all ages, food galore with lots of door prizes and silent raffle items, and of course, music for dancing. The firefighters will be cooking hamburgers and hot dogs for everyone and the baked beans will be provided by Jethro's. Cole slaw and several other side dishes and desserts will round out the menu.
There won't be any fireworks to celebrate the Fourth of July in Carson Valley, but there will be lots of places people can go to find them.
