There won't be any fireworks to celebrate the Fourth of July in Carson Valley, but there will be lots of places people can go to find them.
After the fireworks for Carson Valley Days' centennial celebration in June, people wondered why there aren't any similar displays in Carson Valley during Independence Day.
There's a big difference between June 10 when firefighters couldn't get the foliage to catch fire because it was so wet and July 4 when hot temperatures and high winds combine for a 95 percent chance of ignition.
There's also a big difference between one Carson Valley Days in a hundred and finding a sponsor for a similar event on the Fourth.
Fireworks are expensive, and we've heard grumbling in the past from Carson City for years over coming up with subsidies for their celebration. We're glad they do it, but we know that the more fireworks shows there are, the more limited resources will be.
The Carson Valley events we have for the Fourth are enough to keep us entertained during the daytime, and there are lots of folks for whom a trip to the Lake or to Carson to watch the fireworks is part of the tradition.
Here's wishing everyone a safe and happy Fourth of July.
