The annual Ruhenstroth Volunteer Fire Department Bar-B-Q is July 10 at the station on Pinto Lane. It's always a fun evening to visit with neighbors that we may be too busy to see during the year and a chance to meet new friends - a giant block party is the department's goal. There will be games for all ages, food galore with lots of door prizes and silent raffle items, and of course, music for dancing. The firefighters will be cooking hamburgers and hot dogs for everyone and the baked beans will be provided by Jethro's. Cole slaw and several other side dishes and desserts will round out the menu.
Our firefighters will be at the mailboxes in the evening selling tickets for dinner so be sure to get yours early. They are very reasonable at $6 each and $3 each for those under 12 years of age. This is the same price they have charged for the last 19 years. Not too many places can make that claim.
If you won't be able to attend the barbecue, you can still buy tickets and consider it a donation or thank-you to the men and women who protect us from the devastation of a fire. Beverage beans will be available for purchase when you arrive on July 10. Instead of tokens, you purchase "beans" that can be redeemed for the beverage of your choice.
Mark July 21 on your calendar as this year's Day in the Life of Carson Valley Project. Everyone is invited to participate by taking photos of anything that interests you or is part of your life on Wednesday, July 21.
It could be your family, friends, or pets or it might be a special location you found on a hike. Whatever you see on that day that shows how great it is to be in Carson Valley is something you to photograph and send to photo@recordcourier.com.
The only requirement for the project is that the picture be taken in Carson Valley on July 21. Identify your subjects and where the photo is taken. Invite your children, grandchildren, or anyone with a camera to take a photo and submit it to Shannon Litz. She will be choosing photos to include in next year's Almanac from your submissions. If you have any questions, please call Shannon at 782-5121, ext. 209.
Sunday is Independence Day. Enjoy the long weekend, fireworks and outdoor festivities - hopefully you won't have to work but if you do, find those moments that put a smile on your face. Some will choose to travel to other areas and many will come to the Carson Valley. However you spend the weekend, please be careful and safe.
