The annual How Big Is Big fishing derby started July 1 and will run until July 30 on the West Walker River. There will be fish plants during the derby, including one this week, so there should be plenty of fish out there to catch. Just take the ones you catch over to the Walker General Store to be weighed and entered in the contest. This year, there is also be a division for junior anglers 12 years old and younger. All junior contestants will receive a certificate for a free ice cream at Walker Burger, so let them have at it. This is always a fun event and should be the same this year.

Fourth of July

I hope everyone had a fun holiday and some good barbecued food. This is such a good time to get together with friends, old and new. My husband, Mike, and the other members of the Antelope Valley Lions Club were busy on the holiday. Their club had a float in the Bridgeport 4th of July parade and handed out flags to the crowd enjoying the event. As always, that was a really fun time for those participating and attending. The weather and the entertainment were really good, so if you missed it this year, plan on being there next year.

Walker Senior Center

Their monthly newsletter has been mailed for several months to all of the Antelope Valley postal patrons. In the latest issue, they have asked that those who enjoy the mailing and would like to keep receiving it let them know, as they will be stopping the mailing to those who don't tell them. Just call Sandi at 495-2323 and have your name put on their new mailing list. It is really handy and interesting to be kept informed on all the activities they have, as well as the services available to our residents by various agencies.

Walker Thrift Store

The summer hours for the store and recycling center will be as follows: Thrift Store will be open Monday through Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The Recycling Center will be open Tuesday through Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. It is really helpful if you get your recycling to them by 2 p.m. to let them get their paperwork done on your delivery before closing time. Your patronage is always appreciated by the staff and the community. This month's Bag Sale will be $3 for all the clothing you can fit in a bag, and it will take place July 19 through 24.
