Surprised at the venom

In response to D. MacClement's rather angry response to my letter printed on June 23. In my opinion, I am not labeling hard working people as ignorant in my letter. Speaking from past experience, for over 10 years I worked two and three jobs plus overtime when I could get it in order to make my mortgage payment as well as pay my bills. I worked as a janitor in spite of my mother's objections due to the fact that I could not qualify for a higher paying position. I also rented rooms out in my house because all of the overtime and extra jobs did not earn me enough money for basic survival.

I was eventually able to go back to school at the ripe old age of 57 because Don Bently was kind enough to pay for my education. Not all employers will do that. I could have never paid for my tuition, classes or books without his generosity.

For self improvement, as well as awareness as to what is going on around me, I read two newspapers daily as well as listen to more than one news channel in order to get more than one perspective.

Striving to improve my outlook on life is a daily challenge.

Although Bill Gates dropped out of college and is doing just fine, not everyone who drops out of school is. Some people prefer trade schools or learning a trade hands on. In our current economy they have more opportunities to support themselves than people who do go to college.

Looking back on the many self paved tough roads I have followed and bad choices I have made due to lack of self as well as public education, it is my hope that I can inspire others to make better choices. Better choices is something that I feel the state of Nevada could benefit from.

Personally I was very surprised to see such venom expressed from a Democrat but then I feel that everyone has a right to their opinion as well as freedom of speech.
