We have a winner for the Douglas County Historical Society's June photo contest. Almeta Bey-Carrion entered some of our initial contests and she is back as the June winner with her great photo of a mama bear and her baby. Thanks, Almeta, and congratulations on your great photo.
We have heard that the historical society's June 19 flea market was so successful that there just might be another one toward the end of summer. For now it may be just a rumor, but if we hear of a possible date, we'll let you know. If you would like to see another flea market this summer, call Cindy at 782-2555 and let her know.
Have you gotten your Taste of the Towns tickets yet? Aug. 7 will be here before you know it and you don't want to be left at home while everyone else is out tasting our local restaurant fare. And you don't want to miss the opportunity to visit the shops along the walk. This is always a memorable evening of food and fun and music and dancing. We'd hate to think you missed it just because you forgot to buy a ticket.
Tickets are $25 per person, but only $20 per person if you are a member of the Douglas County Historical Society or Thrivent Financial. Tickets are available at the Gardnerville museum or by calling 782-2555 to charge by phone. Call 790-1565 for the name and phone number of your Thrivent representative. Thrivent graciously sponsors this event in part and their contributions help keep your museums open for you to visit.
While you are buying your tickets for the Taste of the Towns, you might want to bring your camera and take your best shot of what July in Douglas County looks like. Our photo contest is open now until July 31 for your photo showing what you love most about July. Submit photos in hard copy to the Gardnerville museum or e-mail it to in2my2cats@yahoo.com. The winning photo will be featured for July in our 2011 calendar and appear in this column.
Speaking of the 2011 calendar, it will be going on sale before you know it and this year we will be printing a limited number of copies. Start planning now for the number of copies you will need. We'll let you know as soon as it is available for purchase. The calendar will feature all of our photo contest winners, so whomever you give it to will get to appreciate our valley one more year.
Contact the Douglas County Historical Society at www.historicnevada.org or at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville at 782-2555. Remember, DCHS and its two museums in Gardnerville and Genoa don't receive any regular state or county funding. It's up to our members and friends to help us keep our doors open.
