As of noon Thursday, two people had applied to fill the vacancy created by the Aug. 6 resignation of Justice of the Peace Jim EnEarl.

Applicants have until Aug. 20 to file resumes and letters of interest with Douglas County Human Resources for the elective position that pays $103,417.60 annually.

County commissioners will select the next justice of the peace at a special meeting to be scheduled.

Applicants who filed this week include:

-- Mary James, 53, Gardnerville, legal assistant.

In her application, James said she had 30 years of experience working in law. She is employed with King and Russo Mediation and Management. James has been a Carson Valley resident for six years.

She said she was "hardworking, analytical, fair and impartial with a sense of duty and strong ethics."

James said she would bring many tasks and accomplishments to uphold and support the legal system.

-- Kip Steele, 59, Gardnerville, State of Nevada real estate investigator.

Steele, a former FBI special agent, said he had 34 years in civilian and military government service.

"Although this applicant is well aware there will probably be professional attorneys and probably paralegal-trained applicants for the East Fork Township justice position, it is believed a nonattorney with a broad experience would be a better person for the job," Steele said in his application.

He said the judge needs to focus on the "common sense" interpretation of a law and the intent without the "understandable natural urge to peruse the issue from all angles and read more into the matter being considered than necessary."

To be considered for the judgeship, the applicant must be a resident and qualified voter in East Fork Township with a high school diploma or equivalent.

To qualify as an elector, the applicant must be a United States citizen, minimum age 18, and a resident of the state for six months and East Fork township for 30 days. The applicant must have never been convicted of treason or a felony or judged incompetent.

The only other requirement to be East Fork justice of the peace is that the candidate never faced discipline resulting in removal or retirement from judicial office.

Interested applicants must submit a resume and letter of interest to Douglas County Human Resources, 1594 Esmeralda Ave., first floor, Minden, 89423.
