The Douglas Animal Welfare Group is sponsoring an emergency adoption event 10 a.m.-4 p.m. July 31 at the shelter because of an over abundance of available dogs and cats.
"Douglas County Animal Services has been on the brink of being at or near full capacity for the entire summer," said Kathy Robbins, a member of DAWG.
She said there were an estimated 20 dogs and five cats on the premises and 10 animals in foster care.
In addition to the opportunity to make an animal friend for life, free spay and neuter of adult dogs and cats will be offered.
Spay and neuter charges for dogs range from $85 to $130 depending on the gender and weight of the animal. Cat spay or neuter ranges from $45 to $90.
"We also supply free microchips, a free $75 training coupon for dogs and a free pizza card with every adoption," Robbins said.
She said drinks and food also will be available.
"There is a wonderful variety of dogs and cats available - small ones, old ones, large ones, seniors, even a three-legged small dog," she said.
The shelter also has four senior dogs available. Barney, Grover, Lucky Lady and Bob are just waiting for new homes in which to spend their sunset years.
Robbins said many people automatically think of a puppy when looking to adopt, but senior dogs come with many qualities that puppies take years to develop.
They offer unconditional love and are content to sleep and cuddle the day away, but do enjoy a daily walk.
Experts say that senior dogs and senior owners bring out the best in each other.
Generally, the dogs are house-broken and have outgrown shoe-chewing and other puppy behaviors.

The event will be held at Douglas County Animal Services, 921 Pinenut, Gardnerville.
