Orva Selkirk Stark

A small family service is 11 a.m. Wednesday at O'Brien, Rogers & Crosby Funeral Home, 600 W. Second St., Reno, for Gardnerville native Orva Selkirk Stark, 96, who died July 21, 2010, at Park Lane Assisted Living Facility.

Born March 1, 1914, in Gardnerville to Albert Newport and Sue Rodenbaugh Selkirk, who owned and published The Record-Courier, she grew up above the newspaper's offices on Eddy Street. She graduated from Douglas County High School in 1932, and attended the University of Nevada, where she was president of the Tri Delta Sorority.

After earning her degree in education, she taught third and fourth grade in Gardnerville, before marrying William La Rue Stark of Reno.

Mrs. Stark gave birth to Sharon Sue Stark in 1942, and shortly afterward left Reno for Boston, where her husband was attending Naval officer training at Harvard University.

She returned to Gardnerville and lived with her parents until the end of World War II. She and her husband made their home in Reno. She was active in the Tri Delta Alumni. She served on the grand jury for an extended time, volunteered with the Washoe County Elections Board and attended the Methodist Church.

She is survived by her daughter Sharon (James) Richards; grandchildren Lisa Soraghan, Page Ankrom and Mark Vaughn; great-grandchildren Kennedy Vaughn, Callan and Aidan Soraghan, and close friends Mitch and Helen Dominguez.
