The Douglas County Historical Society has become a participant in the Blue Star Museums program that offers free admission to museums for all active duty military personnel and their families from Memorial Day through Labor Day 2010.

Blue Star Museums was started as a pilot partnership among Blue Star Families, the National Endowment for the Arts, and more than 800 museums across America to offer free admission to families with a parent or spouse serving during this time of combat in Afghanistan and Iraq, especially focusing on the approximately 1 million children who have had at least one parent deployed. This program offers these families a chance to visit museums this summer when many will have limited resources and limited time to be together.

The free admission program is available to any bearer of a Geneva Convention common access card, a DD Form 1173 ID card, or a DD Form 1173-1 ID card, which includes active duty military (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard), National Guard and Reserve members and up to five immediate family members.

Immediate family members are defined as a spouse or child of active duty military or active duty military family member.

Spouses of deployed military are eligible for Blue Star Museums. Just bring your DD Form 1173 ID Card, or DD Form 1173-1 ID Card, for active duty military family members. The Courthouse Museum in Genoa and the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville are operated by the historical society and are participating.
