The Douglas Tigers summer league baseball team picked up a 3-2 win over South City PAL (Calif.) in the opening round of the 44th annual Joe DiMaggio World Series last Friday at Wooster High School.
From there, a pair of back-to-back losses brought a quick end to the season as the Tigers finished fifth at the tournament.
Douglas fell 8-5 to the Sierra Sundevils Saturday afternoon as Kameron Van Winkle pitched a complete game.
The game was tied going into the seventh but the Sundevils pushed three runs across on a bases-loaded triple.
"Kameron pitched pretty well, but we made a couple of defensive mistakes that put us behind the eight ball early on," Douglas coach Bruce Jacobsen said.
Douglas lost to the Tri-County Gamblers Sunday 11-2 to end the season.
"We didn't play a whole lot of defense and we didn't pitch too well," Jacobsen said. "It was a tough game."
Tim Rudnick, a 2009 Douglas graduate, pitched the Tigers to Friday's win.
This marked the first year the Tigers had ever qualified for the World Series, which the Reno Muckdogs went on to win - beating the Sundevils 8-7 in the championship.
Other participating teams were San Carlos, Calif., the Vallejo (Calif.) Spartans and Pacifica (Calif.).
"All in all, it was a great summer that is hopefully going to get us off on the right foot going into next year," Jacobsen said.
