Remembering Auntie M's

Recent events have renewed my interest in writing a book about the coffeehouse "Auntie M's" and all the wonderful relationships, extensive and exhaustive conversations and great characters. One such character, Jim Estabrook, passed in February of this year, as did a wonderful, sweet child named Ahmen. The coffeehouse was a gathering place, one where most felt safe enough to say anything they wanted, arguing was encouraged, leaving as friends was expected.

It was 50 years ago this July 9 when my parents Norbert and Linda Monohan got married. I like to joke how great it is that they still like each other. In my generation's fast-paced lifestyle we may have to add marriages together to get to 50.

Identifying problems with pines

Pines often provide a backbone to a home landscape. They are a constant presence through all seasons providing shade, shelter from the wind and rugged beauty. Usually pines are maintenance free - give them the water they need and they seem to thrive with a little minor pruning now and again.

Faith, hope, love the greatest virtues

Most agree that one of the greatest chapters in the inspired Scriptures and in all literature is the 13th chapter of the First Epistle of Paul to the Corinthians. This chapter is such a literary masterpiece it is worthy of being read again and again. Christian love, the prominent feature of Christianity, is the subject of these verses. For better appreciation, this chapter should be read in a modern translation of the Bible which makes very clear, God's definition of love.

Go ahead. Admit it. You have World Cup fever. USA! USA! USA! It's OK. You are allowed to jump on the United States' soccer bandwagon. You've earned it, having either played youth soccer yourself or suffered through driving your kids to their countless games on Saturday mornings sometime over the last two decades. Some wizardry needed to evict barn owls

June, and as for the weather, would say spring is going to show up just in time for summer. Plenty of snow still holding onto the tips of the Sierra so irrigation water is flowing nicely. Water wars can wait until late summer, and they aren't really even wars, just mumblings or slight teasing of fellow water users when we bump into each other in public. No water troubles now gives us time to deal with the Harry Potter episode up in the shop.

Hettrick best for clerk

It has been my great pleasure to work side by side with Lynn Hettrick on a daily basis for most of the last year.

SpringBoard is not the death of literature

The other day one of my clever speech and debate students won a mock debate about which was better: Heavenly or Mammoth. He did this by defining "Mammoth" as a noun depicting a large, hairy, extinct beast and "Heavenly" as an adjective describing a perfect place inhabited by angels. After I finally stopped laughing, I realized that I've seen this strategy before.

SpringBoard leads to decline in teacher quality

For longer than a decade I've empowered my students via two of my personal favorite assertions: the power of good stories, and the power of asking good questions. So, today I'll begin with some questions and end with a story. And in the spirit of education and democracy, you can decide their worth.

All our best to Douglas High grads

Congratulations on your graduation from Douglas High School. You join a long and illustrious tradition of graduates who have spent their public school years in Carson Valley.

Hettrick a fine choice for clerk

The recent letters saying they don't want a "politician" to be the clerk-treasurer made me chuckle. June 8 is the Republican primary election - that is, a run off between political candidates - to determine which one will proceed to face another political candidate in the general election. If you want to hang the moniker of politician on anybody, you have to hang it on everybody who filed to run for office.

Stick with Thran

Ted Thran was appointed by the Board of County Commissioners in 2008 to complete the term of Barbara Griffin, the clerk-treasurer of Douglas County. Now, to stay in office he must run for election as a candidate in the forthcoming three way race in the Republican primary.

Reject consolidation of county water systems

The proposal to consolidate eight water enterprise funds gets more cloudy each time the county staff argues in favor of its adoption. We simply are not getting the whole story.

Final rounds in water battle

With only one more bite at the apple before commissioners take end debate over consolidating the county's eight water systems' finances, we assume Thursday's discussion on the issue will be a lot longer than the hour proposed.

Insurance or cash?

This is a true story. In California I was a clinical psychologist in private practice in "beautiful downtown Burbank." I had staff privileges at a local hospital. One of my specialties was alcohol and drug counseling.

How to select the right herbicide

I spent all of Memorial weekend weeding and only got a portion of my 21⁄2 acres weeded. My gas-powered weed eater was my tool of choice and I worked for hours chopping down unwanted grasses and other undesirables. I also pulled many more out by hand. I'm not against chemicals, but I wanted it to look good that day, not a week or two later.

Backyard feeders attract colorful visitors

The goldfinch by far the most common bird in my yard this time of year. They love to eat out of the bird seed sock hanging from a tree. Sometimes I will see seven or eight all trying to grab on to the sock. I am not sure if they are the American or lesser goldfinch because they are so close in size and both are found here.
