EDITOR:
The recent letters saying they don't want a "politician" to be the clerk-treasurer made me chuckle. June 8 is the Republican primary election - that is, a run off between political candidates - to determine which one will proceed to face another political candidate in the general election. If you want to hang the moniker of politician on anybody, you have to hang it on everybody who filed to run for office.
Of course, the intent of using the name politician was to somehow try to impugn the reputation of Lynn Hettrick. Let me remind you of a few facts that you can verify on the Internet. Hettrick first ran for the Nevada Assembly in 1992 after selling his business a few years before. He served 14 years as the representative of Douglas County and for 12 of those years he was the leader of the Republicans in the Assembly. He decided not to run for re-election even though term limits did not affect him and despite the opportunity to run for the state Senate. Hettrick certainly doesn't fit the negative image implied by the name "politician."
I don't know Mr. Hettrick very well, but I do know that he did a great job of representing Douglas County. He stands up for what he believes in. We all remember his staunch opposition to the tax increases endorsed by a Republican governor.
For almost a year, he has worked for Gov. Gibbons' office as a deputy chief of staff. He is acknowledged to be an excellent administrator with great people skills. Lynn Hettrick will make an excellent clerk-treasurer as well.
