Each of the six members of the second graduating class of Sierra Crest Academy took the microphone to thank their families, friends, and their school on Saturday.

With the fate of the county's only charter school up for debate at the Douglas County School Board on Tuesday, former academy administrator Dave Brackett was a little defiant in his speech to the 80 family members, staff and classmates.

"We should recognize the people who six years ago established this school despite being in a state and a district that was not necessarily charter friendly," he said.

Graduate Kory Voga said he'd attended Sierra Crest from the day it opened.

"Despite the many regime changes, I feel like a survivor," he said in thanking the school.

Graduate Paul Mello said he was surprised to graduate from the school.

"This time last year I would have never expected to be here today," he said.

School board trustee and part-time Sierra Crest teacher Randy Green gave the commencement address.

He said he'd been to three graduations in the last 24 hours, including Whittell and Douglas High School's ceremonies on Friday.

He told the graduates that while it's good to have a plan, it's also good to be flexible.

"You can't anticipate the events that are going to happen in your life," he said. "I've never thought it was a good idea to be defined by your career. It's better to be defined by how happy you are in your career."
