This past weekend local residents received a Reverse 911 call that advised that the West Walker River could flood that night. The next morning, I received an e-mail that told of an advisory about the possible flooding of the river in the Walker/Coleville area.
With our recent winter, there was a lot of snow left above our valley. Now that the weather has started warming, there is drastically increasing snowmelt affecting the river. The river, as of today, is rushing, with very high water levels.
Saturday we were advised that it had technically reached flood stage at 6.0 feet. Please be very careful near the river until this runoff is complete and the levels and speed of the water go down.
Just this past weekend, two gentlemen decided to raft the river near Criss Flat campground. Unfortunately for them, the river was so high and strong, it flipped their raft, threw them into the water, and they had to be assisted in reaching the west shore. Please be careful.
Senior activities abundant
Thursday, June 10, there will be a Senior Health Fair at the Walker Community Center from 10:30 a.m. till 2:30 p.m. This is put on by several organizations in our area to let seniors know what services are provided for them. They also give visitors free items from their groups, as well as a free lunch from noon to 1 p.m. Having gone to it in the past, I can say that is very informative and worth visiting.
The Walker Senior Center has Movie Monday on June 14. They will be showing the newly released "Free Willy - Escape from Pirate's Cove," starring Beau Bridges, which will begin right after lunch.
The senior center's Father's Day lunch will be June 18, beginning at noon. A real bonus of the party is that Les Armer and Gene Guadagni will be performing with their banjo and keyboard. If you missed hearing them at the St. Patrick's Day party, you'll really enjoy their entertainment.
June 25 the Walker Senior Center will host an indoor luau and lunch. Feel free to wear your Hawaiian clothes if you have them. As with all activities at the senior center, please RSVP at (530) 495-2323.
ATV Jamboree
There is still time to register for the Northern Mono Chamber of Commerce's ATV Jamboree June 16-19. Just call (530) 208-6078 for information on participating in these fun rides through our beautiful country.
