If you were at Mormon Station Tuesday evening when the Pony Express Re-ride came to town, you may have seen Nicole and Ashlee selling lemonade and selling hand-painted rocks. The 8- and 6-year-olds are Diana Lombard's granddaughters. The girls wanted to do something for the 150th anniversary of the Pony Express and for the Douglas County Historical Society.
They set up a lemonade stand large enough to also show off the rocks they had decorated commemorating the re-ride. The girls were kept busy filling lemonade glasses and taking turns singing with the local musicians. If they could, they would say thanks to everyone who came out for lemonade and bought a souvenir rock.
Summer events are coming upon us quickly. We were notified just last week that tickets are now on sale for the Aug. 7 annual Taste of the Towns. Mark your calendars now as this is one of our best attended and most fun events. The food is awesome.
Some of the restaurants that will either be open for your tasting pleasure or will have booths in our parking lot include The Overland, JT, Two Guys, Cafe Girasole, Port of Subs, Papa Murphy's, Margarita Man, Bella Vita, Tahoe Ridge Winery, Sugar Plum Bakery and Doppelgangers. In addition, many of the shops along Main Street will also be open and Ben Crocker and Mike Maloney are furnishing the music. The event is partially sponsored by Douglas-Alpine County Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.
Next Wednesday night, June 16, we will feature our Young Chautauquans in a live performance under the tent in Genoa at Mormon Station State Historic Park. The performance starts at 5 p.m. so bring the whole family for an evening out and bring a picnic supper to enjoy. The Young Chautauquans are sponsored in part by Nevada Humanities.
Saturday, June 19, is our one and only Summer Flea Market. You can rent booth space for only $10 in the Gardnerville museum parking lot. Don't miss this chance to buy or sell as well as walk Main Street and enjoy the neighborhood "garage" sale going on the same day. Call 782-2555 for booth space or any other information.
And don't forget our June photo contest. Enter your photo showing June in Douglas County and win the coveted spot on our 2011 calendar. Deadline is 4 p.m. Wednesday, June 30.
Contact the Douglas County Historical Society at www.historicnevada.org or at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville at 782-2555. Remember, DCHS and its two museums in Gardnerville and Genoa don't receive any regular state or county funding. It's up to our members and friends to help us keep our doors open.
