Summer reading programs offered at library in Minden

Lots of fun summertime events are happening at the Minden library, where the theme for the season is water.

The Carson Valley Photo Club has displayed photos highlighting the importance of water in our valley now through June 30. Until June 19, you can vote for your favorite image, with the winning photographs to be announced June 21. The contest is sponsored by the Friends of the Douglas County Library.

This year's summer reading program for children is titled "Make a Splash - Read!" Registration began this week and the program runs through Aug. 7. Kids ages infant to 12 years will explore oceans, lakes, rivers and the creatures that live there through a variety of activities, songs, books and crafts. Children log the time they read (or are read to) and work their way toward some fun prizes.

The teen reading program, designed for readers ages 12-17, titled "Make Waves at Your Library," also runs through Aug. 7. The more books you read, the greater your chances of winning some terrific raffle items.

Story time has moved to Lampe Park for the summer. Children 3 and older are invited to attend each Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. for stories, music and crafts. It's a great opportunity to visit the farmers' market and enjoy some literacy activities with your kids, all at the same time. Outdoor story time runs through Aug. 25.

The dedication of the staff and remarkable volunteers at our libraries make all these programs possible. Be sure to thank them when you visit your local branch.

Tiles decorate Meneley wall

Students at Meneley Elementary recently participated in an ongoing school beautification project spearheaded by parent volunteer Alicia Lamora.

With cooperation from the folks at Sapphire Wizard Fired Arts, students painted colorful images on tiles that were mounted on a wall near the school's entrance. Lamora's husband, John, donated his time and materials to install the tile wall.

Stop by the school at 1446 Muir Drive in the Gardnerville Ranchos and see this collective mural of student artwork for yourself.
