A memorial service is 10 a.m. June 19 at Crossroads Community Church in Gardnerville for Gardnerville resident George A. McConkey, 87, who died May 29, 2010.
Born April 20, 1923, in Taylorville, Ill., to Grace and Bert McConkey, Mr. McConkey was a watchmaker for Bulova when he enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943. After three years of active duty, he married his sweetheart, Marguerite Otten.
The couple moved from New Jersey to Covina, Calif.
Working for General Dynamics on defense and space program projects, he retired in 1988. In 2001, the couple moved to live with their daughter and son-in-law in Gardnerville.
Mr. McConkey is survived by his wife of 64 years, Marguerite; children Dennis (Loree) McConkey, Nancy (Neil) Rodgers, Donald (Cindy) McConkey, and Diane (Dwight) Olsen; grandchildren Alisa and Jason Wakefield, Krysten and Barry Gardner, Matthew and Kristen Rodgers, Adam Rodgers, Jenna Kendall, Lauren Olsen, Meghan and Brian McQuain, Taylorann Olsen, Scott Olsen, and great-grandchildren Nathan Wakefield, Zachary Wakefield, and Aidan Gardner.
