Upcoming summer events

Summer is here and we have a lot of events planned for you this summer.

Saturday is the Douglas County Historical Society's one and only Summer Flea Market. Buy or sell as well as walk Main Street and enjoy the neighborhood "garage" sale going on the same day. We have been told that there will be more booths and more vendors than ever before. See you out there between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.

The next lecture in our series is July 8 when Carolyn Fregulia speaks about logging in the Sierra. She is a fifth-generation rancher in Amador County, local historian and author of "Italians of the Gold Country" and "Logging in the Central Sierra." The logging industry was essential to the success of the economy of Western Nevada. During the Comstock, harvested timber on the east slope was used for mining, in the construction of communities and as fuel. The lecture starts 7 p.m. at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville.

Tickets are on sale for the annual Taste of the Towns on Aug. 7. If you have never attended this event, you are in for a real treat. If you are a regular, you know what a great event this is. Some of the best restaurants in town open their doors to us or set up booths in our parking lot. And you get to sample their fare for the price of admission.

Some of the restaurants open along Main Street include the Overland Hotel and the JT Basque Bar & Dining Room. These are two of the best Basque restaurants in the state. Two Guys from Italy will feature some of its excellent Italian food. Local favorite Sharkey's Casino will give you a taste of hometown Gardnerville. And new this year to its Main Street location is Cafe Girasole. This is an outstanding addition to our tour with wonderful soups, salads, sandwiches and the best pesto about ever made.

That's just the walking tour. Next week we'll talk about the great food right there in the parking lot and the great music we'll have lined up for you. Taste of the Towns might be the event of the summer.

Tickets are on sale at the Gardnerville museum for $25 per person or $20 if you are a member of Douglas County Historical Society. As always, Thrivent Financial is partially sponsoring this event. However, this year Thrivent members will only pay $20 per person as Thrivent will sponsor their attendance. To purchase your ticket as a Thrivent member, see your June newsletter.

At the Taste of the Towns we usually unveil our calendar for the upcoming year. Each month's winning photograph will be featured in the 2011 calendar which will go on sale in October. Now you can see why your winning entry is so important to us. The June contest will come to an end June 30, and we need your entry to complete our calendar.

Contact the Douglas County Historical Society at www.historicnevada.org or at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville at 782-2555. Remember, DCHS and its two museums in Gardnerville and Genoa don't receive any regular state or county funding. It's up to our members and friends to help us keep our doors open.
