Last Thursday through Saturday, the Northern Mono Chamber of Commerce again sponsored the ATV Jamboree. This fun event drew many people from all directions to our scenic area for beautiful rides and a delicious dinner after the last day's ride. Congratulations to the Chamber for making this event so enjoyable for the riders and successful for our community.

Primary election

In the June 8 election, the Mono County contest for sheriff was won by current Sheriff Rick Scholl. The race for the District 4 Board of Supervisors will be settled by a runoff vote in November between Antelope Valley's Tim Fesko and opponent Tim Hansen. The Superior Court judge will be decided in November between Mark Magit and Randall Gephart. As the election approaches, take advantage of the opportunity to learn where these candidates stand on matters important to us, and vote accordingly.

Marines change of command

On June 11, Mike and I were lucky enough to be invited to the change of command ceremony at the Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center. Col. Norm Cooling transferred command of this very active training center to Col. Philip Chandler. Col. Cooling and his family will be missed a lot, but we welcome Col. Chandler and his family to our valley and wish him well.

Whooping cough activity

I recently received information from the Mono County Health Department which warned that we are beginning a peak year for whooping cough. Already, California has had more than three times the number of cases reported at the same time last year. It is very important for parents to check with their doctors to find out all the details about this illness and its prevention. Already there have been deaths among infants from it, so please check on this for your safety and that of your children.

Walker Senior Center luau

This Friday, the Walker Senior Center is holding a luau luncheon, which will be a lot of fun for everyone attending. They'll be serving Hawaiian chicken breast, rice, veggies and salads. If you have a Hawaiian shirt, don't forget to wear it to lunch. Please call Sandi at (530) 495-2323 to confirm your lunch reservation.
