Last Friday, Douglas County Historical Society President Grace Bower met with cousins Nicole Rodriguez, 8, and Ashlee Lombard, 6, to receive the money they raised at this year's Pony Express Re-ride. The girls sold lemonade and hand painted rocks and raised $75 for our historical society. Congratulations, Nicole and Ashlee. Our thanks go to the girls and to their grandmother, Diana Lombard, who helped the girls organize their fundraiser.

You have only a few days left to enter your winning photo into our June photo contest. The contest will end on Wednesday, June 30, at 4 p.m. While the weather this June has been anything but typical, we need you to send us a photo of something that is typically June around here. The winning photo will be published in this column and will be featured in our 2011 calendar.

Last week we talked a bit about the great restaurants on the walking tour portion of this year's Taste of the Towns. If you're not up to walking to the restaurants, some of Carson Valley's finest will be coming to you. This year in the parking lot there will be booths for Port of Subs, Papa Murphy's, Nevada Margarita Man, Tahoe Ridge Winery & Bistro, Bella Vita Catering, Sugarplum Bakery & Treats and Doppelgangers. It couldn't get much better than that.

Port of Subs makes the best sandwiches and Papa Murphy's does things to pizza that are out of this world. Tahoe Ridge Winery & Bistro, Bella Vita and Dopplegangers restaurants all serve fantastic food so whatever they feature in their booths will be outstanding. Now that Sugarplum Bakery has relocated to Minden, we are the beneficiary of their wonderful treats. As for Margarita Man, we'll let you be the judge. After all, there is nothing quite like a Margarita, is there?
