The last week of June has been an infamous one for wildfires in the eastern Sierra.
Monday marked the centennial of the Great Genoa Fire that burned half the town to the ground.
Last week was three years since the Angora Fire claimed hundreds of homes in South Lake Tahoe. June 24 was also the 14th anniversary of the Autumn Hills fire that claimed four homes at the base of Kingsbury Grade.
The thing that links these three fires is that none was an act of nature. All three fires were set by people.
While people were gathered at Mormon Station to learn about fire prevention on Saturday morning, Lake Tahoe firefighters were responding to a fire in the meadow behind Pioneer Village.
When they arrived, firefighters found a 10-foot-square fire about 100 feet away from homes.
Much closer to the fire was an allegedly intoxicated 22-year-old transient named Luke Dons, who was sleeping on the ground.
According to the South Lake Tahoe Police Department, Dons confessed to starting the fire.
No damage was done to private property and no one was injured.
Dons was booked into El Dorado County Jail in lieu of $40,000 bail.
