I'll quote from the Mono County note I received:
"The Mono County Department of Social Services, in cooperation with the American Red Cross, is seeking individuals in the Walker area who are interested in giving back to their community by becoming a Disaster Shelter volunteer.
"Each year, Mono County is faced with one form of disaster or another, from the heavy snow storms and the road closures they create to the fires and floods. Mono County Social Services is charged with the responsibility of opening and maintaining those shelters. But we need you. We can't do it alone."
Volunteers would work under the direction of social services and Red Cross personnel in evacuation shelters in Walker during times of disasters such as fires, flood, and earthquakes. Interested individuals would be required to attend a three-hour training class.
For information, call Kathy Watkins, Mono County Social Services, at (760) 924-1793.

Walker Baptist Bible study
AWANA is a children's Bible study program through the Walker Baptist Church and Marine housing facility. It also offers games and fun activities. Every time our local kids participate with other area groups, they have fun and really do well, which they did a few weeks ago. Congratulations, and keep up the good work.
