Douglas High School students celebrated FFA week Feb. 22-26 with a cow pie (actually chocolate pudding) eating contest, volleyball games in the commons during lunch and the kiss the pig contest. Douglas counselor Vanessa Ozolins "won" the chance to kiss the ag students' pig, Footloose, named for the movie starring Kevin Bacon.
Footloose, 3-month-old blue butt pig, weighs between 110 and 150 pounds and will weigh as much as 250 pounds when he is shown at the FFA Livestock show at the Reno Livestock Events Center in spring. He lives in the greenhouse and is the project of Max Van Pelt and Kinana Moore.
The students are in charge of feeding Footloose with a high-protein diet of pig chow.
"He doesn't eat scraps, he's a show pig," said Moore. She said they expect Footloose to sell for $2-$3 per pound.
