Douglas posts third highest jobless rate in state

Douglas County posted the third highest unemployment numbers in the state in January at 14.8 percent, a 1.7 percent increase over December. According to the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation, the 3,380 people were unemployed in January, up from 3,060 people in December.

According to numbers released this morning, Douglas County's total labor force shrank 1,700 people since August. The number of people employed dropped 2,190, to 19,430, the first time fewer than 20,000 people have been employed in Douglas County in years.

Douglas County still trails Lyon County with 19.1 percent unemployment and Nye County with 16.4 percent.

Statewide job losses were in line with typical seasonal layoffs.
