Here's a synopsis of a special weather statement and a short-term forecast issued by the National Weather Service this morning: Hey, it's snowing. There's less than a half inch accumulation, but it's there and there's a bit more coming. Look for more on Geiger Grade and in Washoe Valley, but even what we're getting could make for a slick commute this morning.
There are chain or snow tire controls on Highway 395 from Muller Lane north to Pleasant Valley and from Jake's Hill to the California state line. Highway 50's requiring chains or snow tires from Stateline almost all the way to Fallon. Chains or four-wheel drive are being required over the passes and around the west side of the Lake.
Controlled burning kicks off on Saturday. The forms will be available on the fire district's Web site starting Friday. That means there will be a lot of 911 calls on Saturday for fires. If burners follow the rules and call in before they burn, then dispatch will know whether they should send the cavalry.
Snow's likely before 7 a.m. After that, we'll see mostly cloudy skies with a high near 42. The storm will clear out today so expect winds 10-15 mph with gusts of up to 25 mph. It's going to get cold tonight, with a low of 17 degrees. The next burst of moisture is due Friday.
