We have another history of Douglas County question for you. This one is readily found in the Gardnerville museum. Come in, find the answer, tell the answer to the docent at the front desk and win a prize. It's that easy. The question is: Who was the senior class president in the class of 1954? Members of the class of 1954 who may remember the answer still have to come in to the museum to win.
The Douglas County Historical Society is now on Facebook. If you have a Facebook page, you can become a "fan" of DCHS by doing a search for us by our name from your Facebook page. We are posting events and current information all the time. Check us out.
The Genoa Courthouse Museum opens April 28 to coincide with the Genoa Cowboy Poetry & Music Festival. Marilyn Elligot teaches spinning techniques at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on the official opening day, May 1.
The nominees have been submitted for Women In History. Our reception for those chosen to be honored will be held at the Gardnerville museum on Saturday, March 20, at 2 p.m. Events coming up in April include Student-Senior Day on Saturday, April 3, and the continuing lecture series on Thursday, April 8. David Toll will be the speaker. His topic will be "Joe Conforte," the former owner of the infamous Mustang Ranch.
In addition to the events planned for the rest of March and April, we have some great events coming up for May. We're planning a Second Hand Rose fashion show and sale on Saturday, May 8, at the Gardnerville museum. And we're asking you to clean out your closet and bring gently used, but stylish, wearable clothing to the museum. We will sell the jeans or shirt you love but have outgrown or that dress you just had to have, and found out it just wasn't you. For information on where to bring your donations or where to get your tickets, please call 782-2555.
This year's Barn Tour is 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 22 and features barns along and near the historic Emigrant Trail and will include some of the oldest barns in Nevada. This tour is held in May as a part of Historic Preservation Month. We are always looking for volunteers to help on the day of the tour for approximately three hours. If you can volunteer please call 782-2555 or 782-2893.
For questions, contact the Douglas County Historical Society at www.historicnevada.org or at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville at 782-2555. Remember, DCHS and its two museums in Gardnerville and Genoa don't receive any regular state or county funding. It's up to our members and friends to help us keep our doors open.
