The candidates for Douglas County School superintendent were whittled down to five as another pulled out on Wednesday. School board members went through 17 applications on Tuesday night and cut that number to eight. Consultant Jim Huge said three of the eight withdrew on Wednesday. Interviews are scheduled to take place in two weeks.

Speaking of candidates, soon-to-be term-limited Minden Town Board member Ross Chichester filed for School Board Area 7 trustee. We also had another countywide race develop when Erin Chandler filed against Recorder Karen Ellison on Wednesday. Jeff James also filed for Gardnerville Ranchos General Improvement District forcing a race there. Assembly District 39 Democratic candidate JoEtta Brown filed for the third time with the Secretary of State's Office on Wednesday. She has company from Independent American candidate David Schumann. Today and Friday are the last days to file for office.

Genoans decided Tuesday night to spend a little money to spruce up the Town Hall. They'll spend about $5,000 to make the entrance a little more inviting in time for the Cowboy Poetry and Music Festival visitors. They'll also pursue developing a plan to renovate the building, whose roof leaks.

While there's a storm coming, it won't be evident today as the temperature hits 55 degrees under partly sunny skies. The winds will be calm to 5 mph. Expect them to pick up tonight a little bit and then really start going Friday morning.
