There's a wind advisory in effect for Carson Valley from 1 p.m. until early Saturday morning. Expect the wind to hit 20-30 mph with 45 mph gusts in wind prone areas. The National Weather Service is warning motorists in high-profile vehicles to use caution along the Highway 395 corridor from Reno to Mammoth Lakes. This is the sort of storm that eats trucks in Washoe Valley.

Burn applications become available today at the East Fork Fire Protection District Office or online at the district's Web site. Controlled burning starts Saturday, which means dispatch is going to get lots of fire calls.

Today is also the last day to file for political office in Douglas, Mono, El Dorado and maybe Alpine counties. We've had a couple of races develop, but only two that will hit the June primary, that I've seen so far. This afternoon will be pretty busy at the Clerk's Office, so give them a break and come in early if you're going to file today.

So what's the weather actually going to be like today? The Weather Service is calling for showers after 4 p.m. with a chance of precipitation at 60 percent. Tonight we'll have some rain before 10 p.m. that will turn to snow as the front passes. It will be nice on Saturday and then a weaker storm is due to roll in on Saturday night.
