Outside of one inning, Friday couldn't have gone much better for the Douglas baseball team.
But it was a disastrous bottom of the seventh at McQueen that kept the Tigers from sweeping day two of the Mike Bearman Memorial Tournament in Reno. The Lancers came back from nine runs down in the final frame of the game to take a 13-12 victory.
Douglas bounced back later in the day to stomp Reed 17-0 in four innings before the game was called on account of rainy weather.
"The first game, we were up 12-3 and couldn't get it done," Douglas coach John Glover said. "We walked eight, hit another and made a couple mental mistakes and errors.
"It was a rough way to start the day."
Douglas got a stellar outing from senior Beau Battista, who struck out four and allowed three runs in six innings of work.
The Tigers used three pitchers in the bottom of the seventh as the Lancers came back for the win.
Douglas came back strong in the nightcap, getting another standout performance on the mound from junior Matt Thomas, who struck out nine, walked none and allowed one hit in his first varsity start.
Ryan Moglich and Kameron VanWinkle each had doubles in the game while Tanner Egan had a pair of base hits and Danny King, Brett Parks, Scott Rudnick and Cody Lommori each had a single.
Against McQueen, Cody Begovich hit an inside-the-park home run, Kyle Ford had a triple and a single, Conner Dillon and Thomas each doubled, Walker Gemmill had two singles and Moglich added another single.
"We hit the ball well all day, and we got good pitching performances too," Glover said. "We just had some lapses at the end of that first game and couldn't close it out."
Douglas faces Lowry at Reed High Saturday at 10 a.m.
