Saturday is our Douglas County Women in History celebration. The reception for the three honorees will be held in the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville at 2 p.m. and is open to the public. The three women who have contributed to the quality of life here in Douglas County are Ida May Baker, nominated by Patricia Gibson Baker; Sybil Larrouy Dunagan, nominated by Susan P. Smith; and Clara Hawkins, nominated by Laurie Hickey.
As usual, we will have memorabilia of their lives on display in the museum. Refreshments will be served following the program. We encourage everyone to support these honorees by attending this free event. Our thanks to supporters Aladdin Flowers, A Wildflower, Harrah's/Harveys and The Record-Courier.

We are preparing to open the Genoa Courthouse Museum on April 28 for the season. We are opening a few days early so that we do not miss the crowds attending the Cowboy Poetry and Music Festival in Genoa that weekend. Our official opening is Saturday, May 1. Marilyn Elligott will be on the porch of the museum teaching spinning techniques at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
We're planning a Second Hand Rose fashion show and sale on Saturday, May 8, at the Gardnerville museum. And we're asking you to clean out your closet and bring gently used, but stylish, wearable clothing to the museum. We will sell the jeans or shirt you love but have outgrown or that dress you just had to have, and found out it just wasn't you. For information on where to bring your donations or where to get your tickets, please call 782-2555.
This year's Barn Tour is 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 22, featuring barns along and near the Historic Emigrant Trail and includes some of the oldest barns in Nevada. This tour is held in May as a part of Historic Preservation Month. We are always looking for volunteers to help on the day of the tour. If you can volunteer for approximately four hours, please call 782-2555 or 782-2893.
As of this writing, there has been no winner in our history quiz. And this is an easy question. Who was the senior class president in 1954? You can find the answer easily and you won't even need to go downstairs. In fact, you can find the answer, well, maybe that's enough of a clue for right now. Come into the Gardnerville museum and tell the docent your answer and win a prize.
For questions, contact the Douglas County Historical Society at www.historicnevada.org or at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville at 782-2555. Remember, DCHS and its two museums in Gardnerville and Genoa don't receive any regular state or county funding. It's up to our members and friends to help us keep our doors open.
