LARAMIE, Wyo. - The University of Nevada women's basketball team fell to Wyoming, 74-53, in the first round of the WNIT Friday night in Laramie, Wyo., in front of 3,547 fans. With the loss Nevada ends its season with a 17-16 record.
Nevada led Wyoming until the 13:56 mark of the first half when Cowgirls went on a 7-1 run to go ahead 17-10 with 10:32 left in the first half. Shavon Moore's layup cut Wyoming's lead to seven, 22-15, with 8:29 to play but the Cowgirls scored on the next possession to go up by nine.
Neither team scored for nearly four-and-a-half minutes before Wyoming extended its lead to 11 with 4:34 to play. Nevada used a 6-2 run capped by a steal by Holly Jones and fast-break layup by Nicole Williams to cut the Cowgirls lead to four, 31-27, with under a minute to play. Wyoming went into the half with a 33-27 lead.
Wyoming opened the second half with a 9-0 run and went up by 15, 42-27, with 18:27 to play. Johnna Ward hit a three to cut the lead to 12 with 17:42 to play. Wyoming pushed its lead to 17 points, 49-32, with 13:44 left in the game. Nevada cut the lead to 11 buy Wyoming responded going on a 10-2 run to go ahead by 20 with 6:28 remaining.
Moore led Nevada with 16 points while Kayla Williams added nine. Amanda Johnson recorded a team-high seven rebounds while Moore and Tahnee Robinson each added six. The Pack shot 31.3 percent (21-of-67) from the floor.
Senior Marianne Lombardi became Nevada's all-time leader in games played with 125 passing Dellena Criner who played in 124 career games for Nevada.
As a team the Pack set the program record for points in a season with 2,086 points passing the 1999-00 team recorded 2,050 points during the season. Nevada also set a program record for free throws made in a season with 483 passing the 1999-00 team that recorded 482. Moore, the active career leader who entered the game with 498 rebounds, recorded her 500th career board against Wyoming as she finished the game with 504 rebounds.
