Douglas High School senior Katherine Crowe was named Miss Douglas County on Saturday. She will represent Douglas in the Miss Nevada Pageant in Mesquite in July.

The 18-year-old said the Miss Douglas County contest was her first pageant.

"I entered for the scholarship opportunities and as a chance to do something I wouldn't have normally done," Crowe said. "It's very exciting. It's a great experience meeting previous title holders who shared their knowledge of past experiences and helped us."

Crowe performed a lyrical dance that she choreographed to "Dancing" by Elisa. Her personal platform is dancing with disabilities.

She is on the Douglas High School dive team, is a team coach at Tumbleweeds gymnastics, and teaches a dance class of about 10 students at Douglas.

"The class is a new thing I started when I entered the pageant," Crowe said. "Dancing is my passion. I've been taking dance since I was 14 and started gymnastics when I was 3."

Crowe's future plans include attending the University of Nevada, Reno.

"I'll continue with dancing and try for a spot on the dance or dive team, but I'll have to pick only one because they compete in the same season," she said. "I'm aiming for UNR because I want to be available to help the girls who want to compete for the titles next year."

The new Miss Douglas County lives in Genoa with her parents Becky and Brian Crowe and twin sister Annika.

Carson City resident Jessica Shull was named Miss Carson City 2010 at the joint pageant held at Capital Christian Center in Carson City. Shull will represent Carson in the Miss Nevada Pageant.

The Carson City Outstanding Teen and Douglas County Outstanding Teen competitions were also held Saturday. Bailey Gumm, 14, was named Douglas County Outstanding Teen with the platform of autism awareness. Diana Sweeney, 16, of Carson City, is Carson City's Outstanding Teen.

Of the 16 Carson and Douglas contestants, Alisa Merino, 18, of Douglas County was named Miss Congeniality, while Karessa Jared, 21, of Carson City and Tristin Silva, 15, of Douglas County, each received Spirit Awards.
