March 26, 1915

Governor Boyle has signed the three bills relative to the removal of the county seat from Genoa to Minden and bonding the county for the erection of the new building as well as for the erection of the new county high school at Gardnerville.


80 years ago

March 28, 1930

It has been reported that crap games, roulette, twenty-one, faro and other games were openly conducted at Reno in various gambling houses. It is not understandable why Reno can be made the home of wide open gambling, while other towns of the state are prohibited by law to conduct percentage gambling games. It does appear that Reno has set up a principality of her own despite state laws contrary, and is gaining a reputation as the little Monte Carlo of the West.


50 years ago

March 24, 1960

Changes in the driver's license law passed by the 1960 session of the Legislature make it necessary that all applicants for renewal of their driver's license appear before a license examiner and submit to an eye test. No longer will drivers' licenses be renewed by mail. The licenses can now be renewed 90 days before they expire. The fee will remain at $2.


25 years ago

March 28, 1985

Years of bitter controversy ended when the Loop Road around the Stateline casinos was completed. The uphill portion of the loop behind Harrah's was the last section to be paved. To celebrate, and maybe to erase some bad memories, the name of the road was changed to Lake Parkway by officials of Douglas County and South Lake Tahoe, with new signs at U.S. 50 near the First Interstate Bank.

Keep the moped handy. Better yet, pump up those bicycle tires. Less than a year ago, gas prices spiked 62 percent in two months to a high of $1.55 for unleaded regular gas. By April 1999, three stations in Carson Valley had gas priced as high as $1.75 for premium gasoline. Since the beginning of March, gas prices across the country have rocketed toward $2 per gallon.
