March looks like it will go out snarling as a windstorm is predicted to roll in Monday and Tuesday.

In a special statement issued this afternoon, the National Weather Service is forecasting that the jet stream and a cold low pressure system will converge on the Sierra on Monday and Tuesday, bringing 40-60 mph wind gusts to the valleys. The foothills could see down-slope winds of up to 70 mph, as could wind prone areas along Highway 395 from Susanville through Western Nevada and south to Mono County.

A high-wind watch goes into effect Monday afternoon, with southwest winds gusting 55-65 mph in the Valley. Winds could cause flight delays. Forecasters recommend moving any unsecured outdoor items such as deck or lawn furniture indoors or tying them down.

Forecasters are warning motorists to expect travel restrictions on high profile vehicles along Highway 395 and near zero visibility in the deserts.

The cold front could bring moderate to heavy precipitation with snow levels above 7,000 feet on Monday afternoon, falling to below 6,000 feet by Tuesday afternoon.

The best chance for snow in the Valley is Tuesday night as the front passes. Snow showers are expected to continue in the Sierra on Wednesday with high temperatures in the mid-40s in the Valley through Thursday.
