Lake Tahoe Community College employee Kathy Strain, a science laboratory specialist, has been named a Community College Classified Employee of the Year, college officials announced this week.

Strain will be honored May 4 at the California Community College's Board of Governors Meeting.

Winners of the prestigious statewide award are selected by representatives of the Community College Board of Governors, state Chancellor's Office and the Foundation for California Community Colleges.

Nominees are evaluated on their commitment to the mission of community colleges, professional ethics and standards, and serving as a leader beyond the local institution. A $500 cash award and plaque are presented to each recipient.

LTCC human resources director Susan Walter nominated Strain for this award largely because of the time and commitment she has devoted to her role as campus safety officer.

"She is 'cherished' - yes, this the word used in her last evaluation - by her science department for her job as both full-time laboratory specialist and also popular adjunct science instructor," Walter said.

"The science faculty, Dean Cynthea Preston and I simply could not imagine anyone more deserving of this award," Walter added.
