Main Street Moments is back. Dorothy in "The Wizard of Oz" was right; there is no place like home.
Those who love to photograph Douglas County have been busy in April. It was almost impossible to pick a winner, but our judges chose Kathy Mortimer's photo of a ewe and her lamb as the winner of the Douglas County Historical Society's April photo contest.
The May photo contest is now open. Your winning photo of what typifies Douglas County in May is due by May 31 at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville or at the e-mail address below.
Saturday is the Second Hand Rose clothing sale, fashion show and luncheon. Call 782-2555 to see if there are any tickets left. Ticket price includes shopping, green salad lunch with dessert and a fashion show featuring fabulous secondhand clothes. Shopping begins at 10 a.m. and luncheon is served at 1 p.m. Profits benefit our museums.
The 2010 Historic Emigrant Trail Barn Tour is May 22 featuring some of the valley's best known barns, including Van Sickle and Jubilee Ranch. This is your chance each year to come out and see how these barns were built, many without nails. Relive the history of our valley and imagine how people and their livestock fared 100 years ago.
Tickets are on sale at the Gardnerville museum and are $15 for Douglas County Historical Society members and $20 for non-members. The tour begins at 9 a.m. and concludes at 1 p.m. All barns on the tour are on or near the historic Emigrant Trail so the entire tour takes about three hours. Call or come into the museum to get your tickets to this amazing event.
The Douglas County Historical Society's one and only flea market is 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 19 at the Gardnerville museum. Booth space is $10 for a 10-by-10 foot space. Applications are available at the front desk or at www.historicnevada.org. The Main Street Gardnerville program is working with us to have a neighborhood garage and business sidewalk sale on the same day, bringing a lot of people to the museum parking lot. Call 782-2555 to arrange booth spaces.
Contact the Douglas County Historical Society at www.historicnevada.org or at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville at 782-2555. Remember, DCHS and its two museums in Gardnerville and Genoa don't receive any regular state or county funding. It's up to our members and friends to help us keep our doors open.
