Sign-ups are coming in for the second annual Douglas County Sheriff's Office Honor Guard 5K fun run May 15 starting in the parking lot at the Judicial and Law Enforcement Center in Minden.

The event, this year called "The Mike Biaggini Run to Remember," is to begin at 9 a.m. Registration is 7:30 a.m. and participants can sign up the day of the race.

The race is in memory of Capt. Mike Biaggini who died Feb. 17 of cancer. The 28-year veteran of the sheriff's office was 55. He was captain of the honor guard.

Proceeds from the race go toward sending the honor guard to the National Law Enforcement Officers' Memorial in Washington, D.C.

The group hopes to attend the event in May 2011.

The honor guard also is looking for fun run sponsors at $150 each who will be invited to advertise with a banner at the event.

The entry fee is $20 for runners and walkers. The fee is $15 for seniors 55 and older.

Children 12 and under are free. Participants with pets, and strollers, as well as roller skaters and bicyclists are welcome.

The 3.1-mile race course is from the parking lot to the Bently Biofuel Outpost service station and back.

There will be water stations and restrooms along the route.

All participants receive a medal.

T-shirts, not included in the entry fee this year, will be on sale for $15. The honor guard also will have $10 collectible coins for sale.

Registration forms are available at the sheriff's office, 1625 Eighth St., Minden, or online at www.douglasconvsheriff.com/Media-Center.aspx.
