Wrapping up the school year, the Douglas High music department showed no less skill during the annual Music in the Park festival in Vallejo, Calif., May 1.
Music director Bill Zabelsky reported Tuesday that the choir, Madrigal singers, band and jazz band all received superior ratings at the event, which draws schools from all over California and Nevada. Three out of the four groups clinched first-place wins in their categories, with the choir coming in second.
"I believe this is the first time all four groups received a superior rating," Zabelsky said.
In addition, Douglas High sax player Cody Lee was named most outstanding jazz soloist.
"I'm really excited and extremely proud of all the hard work and effort that's paid off," Zabelsky said.
This week, the jazz band and Madrigal singers toured the district's elementary schools for the 25th annual silver anniversary tour. The public can still enjoy some of the department's upcoming concerts.
The DHS choral concert, "Tuimbe," which means "let there be music," is 7 p.m. May 13 in the high school commons area. The DHS band concert, "Return to Sousa," is 7 p.m. May 20 in the commons.
To attend, the music department asks for a donation of $3 or one food item for the Carson Valley Community Food Closet.
