High school students interested in learning about the Carson River and the Sierra Nevada are being invited to an eight-day workshop starting at the Nature Conservancy's Whit Hall Interpretive Center at River Fork Ranch near Genoa.

Space is limited to 12 students at the 2010 High Sierra Carson River Workshop, starting June 10.

The workshop starts with four days in Carson Valley learning wilderness first-aid skills, rafting the Carson River, and learn wildlife sketching from naturalist and illustrator John Muir Laws.

Students will then follow the river from its floodplains in Carson Valley up to its headwaters, hiking into the Carson-Iceberg Wilderness for three days.

All food, equipment, and educational materials will be provided. The deadline for applications is May 24. Students who are interested in applying should e-mail Anne Thomas, The Nature Conservancy, at athomas@tnc.org.
