May weather can certainly be changeable. Whatever it is today, get out there and take your winning photo of what means May in Douglas County. We're looking for that one photo that means May in Gardnerville, Genoa, up at the Lake, wherever you think is best. Submit that photo to this column at the e-mail address below or bring a printed copy into the Gardnerville museum. The winner will be announced June 4.
Thank you to all who attended our Second Hand Rose Fashion Show Luncheon and great time. The clothes were absolutely gorgeous and everyone had fun finding a great buy. The table settings were lovely and the food delicious. Let's start now to try to convince the Douglas County Historical Society to make this an annual event.
Our thanks go out to all those who worked diligently to see we had a grand time. Thanks to the luncheon teams, the models, the coordinators, the cashiers and a very special thanks to all who donated those wonderful clothes.
Our Historic Emigrant Trail Barn Tour is in just over one week. Make sure you get your barn book ticket so you won't miss out. Tickets will include a free lecture and slide presentation on the Carson River Route of the Emigrant Trail from the 40-Mile Desert to West Pass. Plus free admission to the Courthouse Museum in Genoa as well as the Gardnerville museum.
Tickets are $15 for DCHS members and $20 for non-members. Paul Oatman, timber framed barn expert, will be on hand to tell about the construction of these historic barns which are some of the first constructed in Carson Valley. Call 782-2555 for information or to charge tickets by credit card. For $1 postage, we'll even mail the tickets to you.
Our one and only summer flea market is June 19. A 10-by-10 foot booth space costs $10. Main Street Gardnerville is participating by having a neighborhood garage sale and business sidewalk sale that day.
We at Douglas County Historical Society are very computer friendly. We are on Facebook in addition to having our own website. Check us out by searching for us on Facebook or go to our website at www.historicnevada.org. And, last we checked, we also offer you the opportunity to visit Ancestry.com while touring the Gardnerville museum. Come in and check out Aunt Tillie's great grandmother, or whoever you want to trace in your family. It's free.
Contact the Douglas County Historical Society at www.historicnevada.org or at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville at 782-2555. Remember, DCHS and its two museums in Gardnerville and Genoa don't receive any regular state or county funding. It's up to our members and friends to help us keep our doors open.
