Spray patterns from a fire hose used to test a Carson City fire hydrant caught the eye of Jeanette Hill, who grabbed her camera and shot the first-place photo for the Carson Valley Photo Club's monthly competition. The amateur photographer titled her winning entry "Water Saves Lives."

She set her Canon EOS 50D camera at 1/3200 of a second to "freeze" the water shooting from the hose.

Second place went to Nancy Hulsey for "Bottoms Up," a photograph of a trio of ducks diving for food.

Pat Stanley took third place with a macro close-up of a droplet creating a pillar-like formation as it splashed in a pan of water.

Water was the theme for the contest, which coincided with a joint project with the club and the Douglas County Library. Dozens of water-themed photos taken by club members will be on display at the Minden Library, 1625 Library Lane, through June.

The club meets at 6:30 p.m. the second Tuesday of each month at Carson Valley United Methodist Church at 1375 Centerville Lane, Gardnerville. Information, club president Doug Dill, 783-4388.
