A federal Environmental Protection official will be touring the Anaconda Copper Mine site in Yerington this afternoon.
EPA Regional Administrator Jared Blumenfeld will visit Weed Heights during his visit to Mason Valley today.;
Investigation and cleanup work is under way at the 3,400-acre former copper mine that is an EPA Superfund site and is being considered for addition to the National Priorities List. If the site is added to the list, EPA will be able to spend Superfund money to conduct long-term cleanup of the mine.
In addition to the site tour, Blumenfeld will present a Brownfields check to Lyon County officials (listed below) in Yerington. The event will acknowledge Lyon County's recent selection to receive a $400,000 EPA Brownfields Assessment Coalition Grant to assess petroleum-contaminated sites.
