Swimming: Records fall as Tigers win state titles

It was a banner day for the Douglas High girls' swim program's relay squads at the NIAA state championships in Las Vegas Saturday.

The Douglas girls' 200 medley relay squad of Taylor Killion, Haley VonSchottenstein, Michelle Forman and Meagan Skilling won the state title with a school record 1:49.27, more than a second better than its previous best. It marked the third time the group has broken the school record in the event.

Forman, Skilling and VonSchottenstein then teamed with Mary Smithen to win the state title in the 200 free relay, again breaking their own school record by nearly a full second, coming in at 1:40.40. The mark was just 0.27 seconds short of the state meet record, set in 2002 by Reno High.

The two relay state titles marked the first for the Tigers in more than 10 years in the events.

Douglas took fifth in the team standings while Bishop Gorman won the state girls' team title. Palo Verde won the boys' title.

VonSchottenstein took third in the 50 free with a time of 24.51. Carson's Jamie Showalter was fourth in the 200 free with a time of 1:58.62.

VonSchottenstein was also fourth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:07.29

Carson's boys' 200 free relay team of Ashton McIntosh, Tim Grunert, Zach White and Luke Gentner took sixth at 1:34.47.

Douglas boys' 200 medley relay team of Eric VanBeuge, Cameron Morefield, Kyle Johnston and Colby Cain took seventh with a time of 1:47.09. The same group took eighth in the 200 free relay at 1:35.14 and seventh in the 400 free relay at 3:32.30.

Forman was eighth in the 200 IM at 2:13.92. VanBeuge took seventh in the 100 free at 51.34. Skilling took seventh in the 100 back with a time of 1:01.44.

Carson's Jose Reed, McIntosh, White and Gentner took eighth in the 400 free relay at 3:35.97.
