MESA, Ariz. - The University of Nevada (34-21-1) was shutout 6-0 by San Jose State University (22-35) in its first game of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament at Hohokam Stadium in Mesa, Ariz. Wednesday night. The loss drops the Wolf Pack into the loser's bracket as they will play an elimination game with Louisiana Tech at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday morning.
After four scoreless innings the Spartans scored three times in the top of the fifth inning. Right fielder Alex Sofranic scored the first run with a solo home run and left fielder Tim Quiery doubled home the other two runs in the inning.
SJSU scored three more times in the top of the sixth inning which would be all the scoring in the game. Three Spartan hitters had RBI hits in the inning.
Spartan junior Blake McFarland (7-4) won his seventh game of the season allowing just the six hits in eight innings. Pack starter Jeremy Cole (4-3) suffered the loss giving up six runs, five earned in 5.1 innings on the mound.
Offensively the Pack struggled collecting just six hits in the game. Third baseman Garrett Yrigoyen (2-for-4) had a pair of the hits for Nevada.
SJSU catcher Corey Valine (4-for-4,R) finished with a game-high four hits. Quiery (2-for-5) and Sofranic (2-for-4) had two hits apiece and each drove in two runs on the night.
