Students at Meneley and Pinon Hills elementary schools participated in Community Activity week during their PE classes recently. Teacher Ellen Lucas organized a special guest presentation for each grade level to encourage participation in fun and fitness activities outside of the school setting.

At both sites, kindergarten students worked their way through a gymnastic obstacle course with guidance from Tumbleweeds coaches Ed and Susan. First-graders were led through a sequence of yoga poses with Ann Wiles, and second graders did a hip-hop dance with All About Dance instructors Serena, Nicole and Sterling. Fifth-graders from both schools practiced soccer drills with Capitol Soccer's Eric Masters.

At Meneley, third- and fourth-grade students were introduced to martial arts with Master Nyls of Northwest Martial Arts Tae Kwon Do and sixth-graders worked on golf skills with Rob and Brian from Carson Valley Golf Course.

Third-graders at Pinon Hills did gymnastics with Tumbleweeds instructors while fourth-graders practiced tae kwon do with Master Nyls. Robert Shawhan, who offers tennis instruction through Douglas County's Parks and Recreation program, introduced sixth- graders to tennis.

Ellen says, "Students all enjoyed having a special guest presenter who was a 'pro' at what they did. There are many opportunities for fun activities in our area."
