Tigers take Governor's Cup

Even though superlatives have been exhausted this election season, Carson Valley residents should still save their highest remarks for the Douglas High School band.

That's because, unlike politicians, the band actually deserves the highest degree of recognition.

"Right now, I feel we have the best street and field show in Nevada," music director Bill Zabelsky said Monday. "Musically, we ran away with it."

Zabelsky was referring to the Nevada Day Parade and Field Show competition on Saturday, during which the Tigers ran away with 15 first-place wins and superior ratings, including the Governor's Cup and Field Show Sweepstakes Award.

In fact, the Tigers virtually swept the field show portion of the contest, earning first place in flags, band and percussion, among other categories.

In the parade, the Tigers garnered sweepstakes and first place in flags, and took second place in band. Although Carson barely edged out Douglas in band, earning 90 points versus the Tigers' 88, the Senators and other teams didn't even come close to the Tigers' cumulative point total, 168.75, which earned them the Governor's Cup.

"It feels great to have it back," Zabelsky said of the Cup, which Douglas won in 2008. "You don't miss something until it's taken away from you, and these kids are well-deserving."

This Saturday, band members travel north for the University of Nevada, Reno, Sierra Band Crusade.

"We want to validate the Nevada Day results by winning this weekend," Zabelsky said.
